PLANO, Texas and YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – UGS PLM Solutions, the
product lifecycle (PLM) subsidiary of EDS, today announced it is
providing Youngstown State University’s Rayen College of
Engineering and Technology an in-kind grant of Solid Edge®
mechanical design software, with a commercial value of $1 million.
The university is installing
Solid Edge in all student computer labs in the engineering college
as well as on the computers of faculty members. The grant also
allows the university to provide students with individual copies
of Solid Edge, free of charge. This gives students the freedom to
work at home rather than being tied to a lab.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to gain
experience with the same cutting-edge software being used by
thousands of companies in industry today,” said Dr. Dan Suchora,
professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at YSU. “This
is the software that is used at many local and international
companies where our students will seek employment. It’s also
used at many engineering schools, including Ohio State and
Cleveland State. It’s world class.”
“UGS PLM Solutions is pleased
to provide this grant to Youngstown State University,” said
Stephen Brown, vice president of channel sales in the Americas for
UGS PLM Solutions. “Today’s leading manufacturing and
technology companies compete on the basis of time to market,
product cost, quality and innovation. Students must have the
opportunity to gain experience with technology that supports these
objectives. We hope that our support for YSU’s excellent
engineering programs will add value for both its students and the
manufacturing community.”
YSU also is supported by Appropriate Technology Inc., an
authorized Solid Edge valued-added reseller since 1999 serving
clients in Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
The software grant is being provided through UGS PLM Solutions’
Global Strategic Partnerships program, which serves more than
7,250 partners globally, including such institutions as the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Stanford University; the
University of Michigan; the California Institute of Technology;
the University of Illinois; Purdue University; and Texas A &
M. The mission of the program is to improve the technical stature
of schools and their ability to develop top-notch engineering,
manufacturing and technology students. Through the program, more
than 761,000 students are trained annually at academic levels
ranging from middle schools to graduate engineering research
programs.
